Bernard Haitink is one of the most sought-after Mahler conductors of our day. In this concert of Mahler’s Three Symphony, recorded live at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, he conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The American Maria Ewing fascinates with her interpreation of the soprano solo featured in the work’s finale.
In this concert, recorded live from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the esteemed Bernard Haitink conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the body he led and developed for a quarter century (1963-88) and with whom his professional relationship dates to 1956, in Mahlers masterly, mammoth Third Symphony, the longest of the composers symphonies, with 6 movements divided in two parts, for alto, women and boys choir. In this recording the celebrated English mezzo-soprano Carolyn Watkinson sings the moving text of Nietzsches Oh mensch! Gib acht! in the fourth movement of the symphony.
