For Simon Rattle Robert Schumann is "the real romantic". And indeed: the effervescence of this epoch, its passion as well as its melancholy can be relived to this day in Schumann's music with a unique intensity.
The symphonies of Robert Schumann have always been part of the core repertoire of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Above all, an interpretation with Wilhelm Furtw?ngler from 1953 has achieved cult status on recordings. The now presented cycle of four symphonies has accompanied the Berliner Philharmoniker throughout 2013 - in Berlin and on tour in Europe and Asia. The Tagesspiegel spoke of a "great moment", the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the "truly sensational quality". A special feature of these recordings from the Philharmonic consists in the decision for the early version of the Fourth Symphony of 1841, which for Simon Rattle compared to the established later version by a more "lightness, grace and beauty" captivates.
Sir Simon Rattle on this first release by Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings: "The Schumann Symphonies have never had the reputation of being surefire bestsellers. But for us as the Berliner Philharmoniker, this is a music that is dear to us like no other. That's why we think it's wonderful to start our new label with Schumann.
