大提琴協奏曲是艾爾加最後一部大型作品，發表後十多年，他幾乎失去創作的意願，其中的原因，很可能是當時正逢第一次世界大戰結束，艾爾加對生活的感受趨於悲觀。作品的另一層憂鬱色彩也來自艾爾加夫人。夫人一直是艾爾加事業最得力的推手，協奏曲創作當時她的身體狀況已經欠佳，艾爾加把這一連串的打擊與對人生的悲歎全部發洩在這首作品。
英國《留聲機》雜誌曾經表示，放眼現今樂壇，阿根廷大提琴家修兒•嘉碧妲詮釋的艾爾加大提琴協奏曲可說是「最真摯，而且音色豐富多樣化的演出之一」。這是修兒•嘉碧妲與拉圖、柏林愛樂於2014年在德國巴登巴登音樂節劇院的演出實況。協奏曲之外，其他曲目包括華格納歌劇《羅安格林》第一幕前奏曲、表現與管弦樂團音色的李格第《大氣層》，以及拓展古典音樂聲音、節奏與動能極限的史特拉汶斯基《春之祭》。
《春之祭》描寫的是「異教徒莊嚴的祭禮。長老圍坐成一圈，注視著一個年輕的姑娘跳舞至死。他們把這個少女當成犧牲獻給春之神」。當中衝撞的和弦、調性與節奏雖然在首演時引起喧然大波，但是很快地，音樂中的野性與原始的魔力成為後來作曲家爭相重現的精神。除了音樂中的現代性，拉圖與柏林愛樂還讓音樂充滿了豐富的感官愉悅。

The Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta made her Philharmoniker debut at the 2014 Easter Festival in Baden-Baden with Edward Elgar’s "Cello Concerto", the final great work of the composer. The conductor and orchestra also performed the prelude to Wagner’s "Lohengrin", Gy?rgy Ligeti’s orchestral piece "Atmosph?res" and Igor Stravinsky’s "Le Sacre du Printemps", a work which is entirely focused on the future and pushes the boundaries of classical music in terms of sound, rhythm and energy. “Sol Gabetta’s Elgar Concerto is one of the best around, a heartfelt, tonally rounded performance.” (Gramophone magazine)
